Fuel saving tips (June 2008) |
13th June 2008
With fuel prices rising almost by the minute, many of us are now starting to feel the pressure of a lifestyle reliant upon motorised transportation.
Below are a list of easy and practical tips that can help you save some fuel:
- Ask yourself – ‘Do I really need to drive?’ – the shortest journeys are the most polluting and inefficient. Join the bike boom.
- Plan your journey – take the shortest, most direct route whenever possible.
- Have your car serviced regularly – efficient running can mean a 10% fuel cost reduction
- Check your tyre pressure – under-inflated tyres create resistance while the car is moving, making the engine work harder and increasing fuel consumption
- Clear out the boot and reduce the weight to decrease engine workload
- Change up a gear before reaching 2,5000 rpm
- Drive under or at the speed limit – a car travelling at 70mph uses 9% more fuel than at 60mph, and up to 15% more than at 50mph.
- Avoid breaking/accelerating hard which strains the fuel gauge – you could save up to 30% of fuel costs
- Switch off the Air-Con as it increases fuel consumption
