Did you know...
The 'green' issue is
"... simply a question of when we will invest in this, either now in inspiration, or later in desperation."
Jan Babiak, managing partner, regulatory and public policy, Ernst & Young

Welcome to the first edition of Olive Press. We have traditionally published a twice yearly newsletter but things in our world of environment and sustainability are moving so fast that we thought you would appreciate a less weighty but more regular update on what we think you need to know. Much will be important to your business, such as changes in key environmental legislation, but we also intend to put a smile on your face when we get the chance. The Olive team wishes you a Happy and Prosperous New Year. |

| What's in store for 2008? |
Whether you take a passive role and just stick to ensuring compliance, are actively looking for early leader advantage and investing in improved access to markets etc. or are somewhere in between, we see a very busy year ahead for our clients. And we have a few predictions.
With energy prices rising exponentially, consumers trends are set to change, favouring environmental and social value added products. | |
2008 will also see growing political and legislative pressures to deliver the mechanisms to mitigate and adapt to climate change and the strain on resources such as land and oil. Read the full Olive views here.

The Department for Transport report ‘UK Air Passenger Demand and CO2 forecasts’ predicts a growth in UK aviation passenger demand of 140% to 2030 (from 2005 figures). This reflects the reasoning for the decision to proceed with the 3rd Runway at Heathrow and further expansion at Stansted.
Major decisions such as these must of course reflect economic and environmental reality and as with many projections is subject to considerable uncertainty. The Cost/benefit analysis for aviation expansion assumes for example a price of oil of $80/barrel in 2030. With the current price of oil at $93/barrel, and suggestions that ‘Peak Oil’ supply has already been reached there may be questions regarding the accuracy of this forecast... read full article. |

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Biodiesel Truck |
Willy Wonka would undeniably be proud.
Two British adventurers have just come back from a 8,500km drive from the UK to Timbuktu in a truck fuelled by biodiesel made from waste chocolate.
Close encounters with Al-Qaeda, corrupt customs officials, sand storms and their choice of vehicle made for a rather eventful journey. The adventurers wanted to show among other things that being green is not necessarily always about the latest gadgets and undertook the journey in a 1989 Ford Iveco Cargo... read full article
